Pak Army Engineers has given further impetus to the execution of development works in federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) aimed at bringing qualitative change in the living conditions of the locals .
These uplift projects have been termed as \"Peace through Development\" that include construction of roads, tracks, schools, colleges, Basic Health Units (BHU) and installation of water supply schemes, hand pumps, dug wells, submersible pumps and micro hydel power stations .
To make FATA more accessible and enhance inter and intra agencies communication links, the construction of roads has been given top priority in the Army development projects. So far 1520 kilometers of roads and tracks have been constructed out of the total planned 1912 kilometers roads in the tribal areas. These include 166 kms in Mohmand, 117 kms in Khyber, 170 kms in Kurram, 152 kms in Qrakzai, 321 kms in North Waziristan and 348 kms in South Waziristan agencies .
To enhance literacy rate in the tribal areas. 32 schools have been constructed that include 7 schools in Khyber, 4 in Kurram, 11 in Orakzai, 4 in North Waziristan and 6 South Waziristan Agencies. Apart from construction of schools, the educated personnel of security forces have also been directed to teach locals at makeshift schools established in the nearby localities.
For provision of clean drinking water, Army Engineers have constructed 25 water supplies schemes, installed 811 hand pumps, 19 tube wells, 21 dug wells and 12 submersible pumps .
Most of the tribal areas in deprived of electricity facilities and people are forced to burn precious wood like pine and oak trees as fuel. Pakistan Army has completed installation of 12 Micro Hydel Power Stations (MPHS) in Khyber and North Waziristan Agencies. These small Micro Hydel Power Stations produce enough electricity to meet the lighting requirement of the adjacent houses .
